Calculating Concrete Block Fill Volume

Concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls are commonly reinforced by filling their hollow cores with liquid concrete grout. This core fill binds the blocks, rebar, and joint reinforcement together, creating a solid load-bearing structure. Estimating core fill volume is essential to order the correct amount of grout.

The volume of grout needed depends on block thickness, core configuration, and the number of cores being filled. Standard CMU block core volumes include:

To find the total volume, multiply the number of blocks by the core volume of the selected block size. For example, filling 100 standard 8-inch CMU blocks requires approximately 22 cubic feet of concrete grout (0.81 cubic yards). Core grout is more fluid than standard concrete. It has a high slump (typically 8 to 11 inches) to allow it to flow easily around rebar and fill small spaces inside the block cores. Using fine gravel aggregate prevents binding during placement.

Pouring grout in tall lifts can exert high pressure on CMU blocks. To prevent block blowouts, walls are poured in stages or lifts, allowing each lift to consolidate and set slightly before placing the next layer.
