Concrete Slump Test & Water Ratios

The water-to-cement ratio (w/c) is a key factor in determining concrete strength and durability. This ratio is calculated by dividing the weight of water by the weight of cement in the mix. A low ratio increases strength and density but makes the wet concrete difficult to place, while a high ratio improves workability but reduces strength.

To measure the workability and consistency of a concrete mix before pouring, technicians perform a slump test. This test measures how much a cone of fresh concrete slumps or deforms when the mold is removed:

Adding water to ready-mix concrete on-site is a common practice to improve workability. However, excessive water dilutes the cement paste and reduces compressive strength. Project specifications limit the amount of water that can be added to ensure the concrete meets its design strength.

Chemical additives, such as plasticizers and superplasticizers, can improve workability without adding water. These mixtures allow for high-slump, fluid concrete that maintains its target strength and density.
