Pouring Concrete in Cold Weather
Pouring concrete in cold weather presents unique challenges. When temperatures drop below 40°F, the chemical reaction of hydration slows down significantly. If the concrete freezes before it reaches sufficient strength, its structural integrity can be permanently damaged.
To pour concrete safely in cold temperatures, builders follow strict guidelines:
- Heated Materials: Ready-mix plants use heated water and aggregates to ensure the concrete is delivered at a temperature of at least 50°F to 60°F.
- Accelerating Additives: Adding calcium chloride or non-corrosive accelerators to the mix speeds up hydration and strength gain.
- Insulated Blankets: Covering the poured concrete with insulated curing blankets retains the heat generated by the hydration reaction.

Subgrade soil must not be frozen when concrete is poured. Frozen ground can settle as it thaws, causing the cured slab to crack and shift. Using ground heaters or insulating blankets can thaw the soil before placement.
Curing times are longer in cold weather. Forms must remain in place for a longer period, and compressive testing is recommended to verify the concrete has reached safe strength levels before removing supports or applying loads.
